What do you do when you try to to relax? There are those who manage to relieve stress, anxiety or worries by observing a natural landscape, those who resort to guided and non-guided meditation techniques (such as yoga) and those who do it by listening to music.
A constantly growing phenomenon is that of relaxation given by watching and listening to ASMR videos for sleep. What does it mean and why can it help you find balance or relax until you fall asleep? We explain it to you in this article.
What does ASMR mean?
ASMR is an acronym that stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response and which we can translate as “autonomous sensory meridian response”. It is a widespread or limited tingling sensation in certain areas of the body in response to an internal or external stimulus.
We talk about ASMR massage precisely to indicate this particular perception which can be caused by stimuli of different nature: visual, auditory, tactile, but also cerebral (thoughts or ideas that arouse emotions and reactions on a physical level).
The final result is the sensation of deep relaxation which can sometimes even lead those who listen to or experience this package to fall asleep.
How ASMR works and what ASMR videos are
As we already said in the previous paragraph, ASMR is a reaction to an external stimulus, so do not confuse the medium with the effect. This is why, for example, we talk about ASMR videos and it is a trend that is becoming popular on YouTube.
The videos and channels dedicated to ASMR reproduce, through the use of sounds and images, the tingling we were talking about before. Among the most popular methods for generating ASMR we find:
-
Whispering, i.e. the reproduction of whispers, murmurs or rustles using a microphone which reduces the impact of environmental noises in the recording while amplifying others instead.
-
The viewing of repetitive images or standardized procedures such as videos showing kinetic sand, objects, food that is meticulously cut on a regular basis or the production phases of certain objects.
-
Videos with role-plays in which the actors simulate particular “role-playing” experiences such as a haircut or a therapy session.
Watching these particular video contents for even a few minutes can generate a feeling of deep relaxation, but not having a scientific basis or demonstrable effectiveness, this theory is not recognized on a medical level as is the case with hypnosis.
As we have already said, the effectiveness of “ASMR massage” is completely subjective and personal, in some people, in fact, it could have the opposite effect of irritation and annoyance. However, the majority of those who have tried watching or listening to this type of content have said they feel more relaxed and in some cases it can solve insomnia problems or panic and anxiety attacks, or even help you fall asleep faster.
